I Found Mycotoxins Where No One Was Looking
My name is Susan Gonya, and I am a registered dietitian, nurse, researcher, and mother—and the founder of Clean Food Solutions.
My work began with a simple but critical
question: What are we really feeding our children?
Through my research, I uncovered a growing concern in the modern food supply—mycotoxins, or mold toxins. These toxic compounds, produced by common food molds such as Fusarium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Alternaria are increasingly detected in everyday foods, including bread, cereals, oats, snack foods, and even infant formula.
Emerging research suggests that chronic, low-level exposure to dietary mycotoxins may contribute to gut inflammation, immune dysregulation, and developmental concerns, particularly in children. Despite this, these contaminants remain largely unrecognized and under-regulated in the United States, making them an important but overlooked public health issue.
Clean Food Solutions was created to bring transparency to the food system and empower families with evidence-based information on foodborne toxins and environmental exposures. Our work focuses on identifying and explaining how contaminants—including mycotoxins, PFAS (e.g., Teflon), plastics, and heavy metals—impact human health, with a particular emphasis on early-life exposure and child health outcomes.
In addition to independent research and education, we provide practical solutions to help reduce toxic burden. This includes recommending safer cookware, cleaner food products, and brands that prioritize quality, transparency, and low-toxin sourcing.
We are also deeply committed to advancing nutrition science and public health education. In our Resources section, you’ll find regularly updated content on:
· Mycotoxins and food safety
· Environmental toxins and human health
· Nutrition and disease prevention
· Clean recipes designed to support long-term health
At our core, Clean Food Solutions is grounded in scientific integrity, transparency, and public health advocacy. Our work is fully independent and not funded or influenced by industry.
We believe that families deserve to know what is in their food—and that access to clean, safe, and nourishing food should be a right, not a privilege.
